Physio-Control mechanical chest compression system
Study design. Of 15 pigs, 10 pigs in the study and sham groups were subjected to 90 min of warm ischemia. Five lungs in the study group were subjected to whole-body cooling and chest <t>compression.</t> Subsequently, the lungs were perfused for 120 min of Lund-type EVLP after 300 min of cold storage. Five lungs in the DBD group were perfused in 120 min of Lund type EVLP following 60 min of CIT without warm ischemia. CIT, cold ischemic time; DBD, donation after brain death; EVLP, ex vivo lung perfusion; WIT, warm ischemic time.

Article Title: A Whole-body Cooling Strategy in Uncontrolled Donation After Circulatory Death: Insights From a Porcine Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion Model

doi: 10.1097/TXD.0000000000001904

Figure Lengend Snippet: Study design. Of 15 pigs, 10 pigs in the study and sham groups were subjected to 90 min of warm ischemia. Article Snippet: Subsequently, the chest was compressed using an automatic mechanical chest compression system (LUCAS2; Physio-Control Inc, Lund, Sweden).

Techniques: Ex Vivo

A whole-body cooling system. After confirmation of death, the donor pig body was immersed in a basin filled with 100 L of −21 °C Dip ice (MARS Company, Gunma, Japan). A centrifugal pump was used to circulate Dip ice. The donor pig chest was compressed using an automatic mechanical chest compression system (LUCAS) to obtain systemic blood circulation. Created by the Cleveland Clinic Art Center.

Techniques:

Heat conduction simulation. A, First simulation without equalized temperature at timing of 0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 min, corresponding to whole-body cooling with no chest compression. Temperature of the lung surface ( x = 30 mm) decreased in a time-dependent manner. B, Second simulation with equalized temperature, corresponding to whole-body cooling with chest compression. The temperature of the first carina was identical to that of the lung surface. The simulated temperature of the first carina was almost identical to the measured tracheal temperature in the study group. WIT, warm ischemic time.
